Frequently Asked Questions Kitesurfing School

Learning to kitesurf without kitesurfing lessons is extremely dangerous and difficult. We at BLOW Kitesurfschool strongly advise against it. Compare it to snowboarding down a steep slope without experience. Apart from the fact that it is terrifying, you also run the risk of having a terrible accident. Kitesurfing lesson(s) makes kitesurfing less dangerous and painful. In addition, there are a number of other benefits:
  • Learning kitesurfing is a super fun process
  • You learn to kitesurf faster
  • You don't need your own gear
  • You learn to assess risk
  • And during the kitesurfing lesson(s) you get to know lots of new people
Most accidents that happen in the kitesurfing world happen 99% by beginners who think they don't need kitesurfing lessons and therefore make the most crucial mistakes. By taking kitesurfing lessons at a good kitesurfing school with experienced instructors you ensure yourself of safe, personal and most importantly fun kitesurfing lessons.

Kitesurfing is not something you learn in 1 kitesurfing lesson. From our experience we see that beginning kitesurfers need about 3 to 5 kitesurfing lessons to master kitesurfing. It is important that you not only learn the practice but also the theory so that you can always kitesurf safely and independently.

BLOW is open from April 1 through October 31. Your kitesurfing lessons are valid 365 days except November - March. Be sure to schedule them on time. It is recommended to start lessons early in the year and schedule them in quick succession so you can kitesurf independently as soon as possible.

Without wind it is not possible to learn to kitesurf, as there is a minimum number of knots required to keep a kite in the air. On the other hand, there is a maximum number of knots to safely teach kitesurfing. On average, 70% of the lessons always go ahead!

  • Minimum wind: 10 knots (3bft)
  • Maximum wind: 30 knots (6-7bft)

This always depends on the experience and weight of the student and the components we want to teach the student.

"Should a kitesurfing lesson not take place, we always contact (email, phone, text) our students so they don't come for nothing."

Kitesurfing remains an extreme sport and you can make it as crazy as you want. Compare it to snowboarding, everyone young and old do it in their own safe way. Kitesurfing is a lot like this, just make sure you stay within your own comfort zone and start calmly sailing back and forth.
Taking kitesurfing lessons is an important step. This is how you learn to kitesurf safely and responsibly. The way BLOW Kitesurfschool teaches is by applying a step-by-step methodology. You determine the pace. In addition, we use the newest and safest materials so we can be 100% confident in our equipment.
We are convinced that everyone can learn to kitesurf and that it will become popular sport #1 in the Netherlands! We see it every day, everyone can learn: kids of 10 to grandpas of 70!

We have three standard day parts in which we teach: morning (09:00), afternoon (13:00) and evening (17:00). But if you have a special request you can always contact us and we try to be as flexible as possible!

The following points you should always pay attention to when you want to take safe and good kitesurfing lessons. Not every kitesurfing school has safety & quality in high regard.

  1. Certified kitesurf school
Please note that kitesurf schools are certified according to the leading labels: IKO/ VDWS/ NKV. BLOW Kitesurfschool is certified as 1 of 6 IKO kitesurf centers in the Netherlands.

  2. Experienced Instructors
Do the instructors have demonstrable experience and are they certified to current standards? BLOW employs only highly trained IKO and NKV instructors with backgrounds in technology, sports & health. Because they have years of teaching experience, they can clearly convey both theory and practical exercises.
  3. Maximum group size
Check how big are the groups in a kitesurfing lesson? BLOW Kitesurf School maintains a maximum of 3 students per kitesurf instructor in a group to maintain the safety and quality of a kitesurfing lesson. With more than 4 students, the quality of a lesson goes down quickly.
  4. New Equipment
A kitesurfing school should always use well maintained and new equipment during all its kitesurfing lessons. Accidents are more likely to happen when older equipment is used. BLOW renews all kites and bars 2 or 3 times a year so we are always working with the latest equipment.

During the season, all equipment is checked every few days by BLOW's instructors. To ensure the safety of our students during a kitesurfing lesson, helmets, impact vests and lycra are mandatory.

  5. Customer Friendliness & Service.
-Is the kitesurfing school available for further advice after the kitesurfing lesson?
-How well is the school known and what is the reputation of the kitesurf school?
-What about certification, when do you get your IKO certificate?

  6. Location
As with snowboarding, it's nice to start on a blue slope without bumps and steep slopes. This principle also applies to kitesurfing; you learn kitesurfing faster in flat and knee deep water. That's why BLOW gives kitesurfing lessons on the Sand Motor in Kijkduin. In this lagoon you don't have to deal with rough waves and currents so you can focus 100% on your board & kite. Should you ever lose your board you can walk through the shallow water and easily find it again.
